Diversity in modelling

Interesting Guardian article today about models challenging normative ideals of attractiveness:  older, feminist, androgynous, black, plus sized. One way of expanding our notions of what constitutes beauty, but also reminds us of just how limited they currently are – given that these models (who better reflect the range of human bodies) are considered to be so remarkable.

  1. On a recent museum trip, a description of a painting of a woman revealed that she was regarded as “the most beautiful woman in the country at the time.” If the woman in the painting had walked into the average American college bar today, she probably would have been largely ignored by frat guys muttering “fatty” to one another and snickering. It was a great reminder to me of just how subjective beauty is.
